I am on page 66 of A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park- this is where Salva's uncle, the leader of the group, was approached by six armed men who then tied him to a tree and shot him. His uncle, who he found in a group, was all Salva had. He was looked up to in the group because he had a gun and was a former soldier. He was the one who brought Salva food, water, and hope up until the day he died.
As the group continues on from the death of their leader Salva thinks "There is no one left to help me. They think I am weak and useless...They are wrong, and I will prove it."(pg. 66). That statement sums up most everything that makes Salva him. Salva is young and seen as just an extra mouth to feed who will probably complain the whole time, but that's not true, Salva may be young and confused, but he is determined and as said in the novel he can only become stronger from the groups neglect to acknowledge his existence and give him food. Throughout the novel he maintains his strength and does not let this discourage him on his journey to the refugee camp and in doing his family proud.
